Our Chair, Blair Jones, and Vice-Chair, Christopher Khaalid Scipio share a message on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Dear IPAC-NCR Members,
On September 30, Canada observes the fifth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a time to honour the survivors of residential schools, remember the thousands of children who never returned home, and acknowledge the enduring impact on families and communities. It is a day for reflection, learning, and a renewed commitment to meaningful action.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action remind us that reconciliation is not a single moment, but a lifelong journey—one that demands humility, courage, and accountability. Each of us holds a unique responsibility in advancing this work.
This day is also recognized as Orange Shirt Day, inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story. Her orange shirt, taken from her on her first day at residential school, has become a powerful symbol of the loss of culture, identity, and dignity experienced by Indigenous children. Wearing orange affirms a simple but profound truth: every child matters.
We encourage you to explore resources, attend local events, and engage in conversations that deepen your understanding of Indigenous histories, experiences, and perspectives. Take time to listen to Indigenous voices, learn about the legacy of residential schools, and reflect on your role in building a more inclusive and respectful public service.
As part of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation, IPAC-NCR will continue to offer programming that amplifies Indigenous voices and stories. Please stay tuned for upcoming learning opportunities.
Let us walk this path together—with respect, intention, and solidarity.
Warm regards,
Blair Jones
